About Us

Our vision
Te Ara Kākāriki Greenway Canterbury Trust is an incorporated charitable trust with the goal of increasing biodiversity in Waitaha Canterbury.
Our mission is to create a ‘greenway’ – a corridor of native biodiversity Greendots between the Waimakiriri and Rakaia rivers, linking the mountains to the sea, Te Waihora Lake Ellesmere and Banks Peninsula
Having Greendot plantings every 2.5 kilometres will increase the biodiversity and habitat available for indigenous wildlife.
We want landowners, members of the community, and students, to understand why we are planting Greendots, and join us to work towards achieving our goals.
GREEN DOT PROGRAMME
Working with private and public landowners we can provide restoration planning, plants, advice, volunteer planters and monitoring for landowners in the Selwyn District. Our focus is on planting the right tree at each unique site and educating the community while increasing biodiversity and creating steppingstones in the Te Ara Kākāriki Greenway.

ANNUAL CANTERBURY PLANTOUT
Each spring we host a number of public planting days at a Greendot sites. Our two larger plantouts, include bus transport for volunteers from locations around Christchurch for a full day of planting. Lunch, snacks and drinks are all provided, along with equipment and planting demonstrations. We also host a shorter self-drive day. We can also arrange weekday planting events for corporate and staff groups.

KID’S DISCOVERY PLANTOUT PROGRAMME
A successful collaboration between Te Ara Kākāriki, Enviroschools and Lincoln University. Currently working with 14 Selwyn schools, we provide an opportunity for students to learn about native biodiversity through hands on experience in adopting a native ecosystem close to their school. The students take on the role of kaitiakitanga or guardianship for their special place and together contribute to restoring the native ecosystems across the Canterbury Plains.

JOBS FOR NATURE PROGRAMME
We have received Department of Conservation Kaimahi for Nature funding for three years from July 2021. This enables the employment of four Kaimahi / Restoration Field Workers over three years to establish and restore two large Legacy Sites, creating valuable and much needed biodiversity havens in the Selwyn District. Their work includes site preparation, planting and maintenance of over 50,000 plants at as well as pest control, fencing, community engagement and building infrastructure.

Te Ara Kākāriki
Our story
Te Ara Kākāriki was launched on November 18th 2005, after discussions from a group of passionate people developed into the idea of creating green corridors of native plantings linking the mountains to the sea across Canterbury.
At the time, the plight of the indigenous biota of the Canterbury plains had long caused considerable concern. Although there were several well-established conservation agencies focussed on the uplands and areas such as Banks Peninsula, there was at that time no large scale ecological or conservation programme for the lowlands of Canterbury.
The depleted nature of the lowlands (in terms of indigenous biota) of the Canterbury Plains was emphasized by both Katie Williams and Colin Meurk who wrote “less than 0.5 percent of the plains still support native vegetation”. The Christchurch City Council added to that by reporting “the loss of these native plant communities has reached a point where habitats for our native wildlife have been reduced to a level where they are now insufficient for continued survival.”

Some key milestones
On the 18th May 2007 Te Ara Kākāriki Greenway Canterbury was established as a charitable trust, and began to seek funding and work together with funders and partners, and the community. With their support together we have been able to achieve some key milestones including:

3 year project
Restoration begun at our two large legacy sites Te Pae o Ahuriri and Ōkakaraiti, thanks to Jobs for Nature funding. Over three years 50,000 plants will be planted.
Today, Te Ara Kākāriki consists of seven volunteer trustees who meet every six weeks to make decisions, with recommendations from the contractors. Each of the trustees also work with contractors on specific areas, such as Greendot planning, plantout days, funding applications, media and information, and Kids Discovery Plantout field day planning. Our contractors include coordinators and ecologists.
Future projects
In the future we have plans to hopefully work on three large key projects. We are actively seeking potential sponsors or companies to partner with on the following projects.
Motu-kākāriki
This will be a large central biodiversity sanctuary of up to 1000 hectares
Huritini ki uta ki tai
Completing a source to lake riparian restoration of the Huritini River
Whakahaumanu Waitaha
Documenting the story of Canterbury Biodiversity Restoration
Please get in touch if you are able to help Te Ara Kākāriki fund these significant projects, or to connect with documentary makers.
